Joyful Bee Farms
Joyful Bee Farms is a family business owned and operated by Marin and Rodica Tomulet. Our farm is located in Quinlan, TX. We began keeping bees on the family farm in 2013 as a weekend hobby. With God’s help and after years of passionate work, our family farm has developed into a small business.
We currently have several bee yards. They are located in Quinlan, TX (next to Lake Tawakoni), on the shores of Lake Fork, and in Emory, TX.
Our interest in keeping bees started with a search for natural remedies for seasonal allergies and for a natural replacement for processed sweeteners. This search led us down a path of learning about the benefits of consuming local honey and pollen and the benefits of replacing processed sweeteners with honey.
We started our apiary by purchasing two spring swarms caught by a beekeeper in our area and received a few pointers from him on how to care for them. Very soon we realized we did not know enough about taking care of bees and started reading and studying about how to care for and manage them. We wish everyone in the world would learn more about bees and their importance in agriculture, especially in the growing of vegetables, fruits, and nuts. We learned that they are key to producing up to 40% of the fruits, vegetables, and nuts that we consume. We also discovered the importance of helping preserve the bees, since so many are dying off because of the chemicals used in commercial agriculture. We learned about the natural enemies they have in the forms of diseases, pests, and predators.
The more we researched, the more interested we became in knowing more about bees and what to do with and for them.
We started multiplying the hives by buying more queens and splitting the hives. Later, we learned how to stimulate bees to produce queens, so we can now multiply the bees in a fast and inexpensive way.
Beekeeping quickly turned into a very rewarding hobby, especially after we pulled our first crop of spring honey. We shared some of it with friends and family, and very soon other people started to buy the honey as well. There were also some who purchased bees from us. These small early successes have led us to create a self-sustaining business based on beekeeping, the sale of bees and queens, honey production, and pollination.
